ESP32-S31 vs ESP32-S3: price and availability

Espressif's ESP32-S31 got a lot of attention this week with ESP-Mosaico, a modular dev kit built around it. If you are choosing a chip for a board you will build soon, the practical question is whether you can buy it in the quantity you need. We checked on 24 October 2026.

Short answer

  • On 24 October 2026 we found no ESP32-S31 chip or module at JLCPCB/LCSC, DigiKey or Mouser. Searches for ESP32-S31 and ESP32-S31-WROOM-3 returned only ESP32-S3 parts.
  • Espressif says the chip has been in mass production since 27 July 2026, sold through its official AliExpress store. Its datasheet is still marked preliminary.
  • The ESP32-S3 is in stock at all three distributors, from about $1.85 for the bare chip to $3.66 for a WROOM-1 module at 100 pieces.

What the ESP32-S31 is

Espressif announced mass production of the ESP32-S31 on 27 July 2026. According to CNX Software, the chip has a 320 MHz RISC-V high-performance core with FPU and SIMD plus a low-power RISC-V core, 512 KB of SRAM, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4 (LE and Classic) and an 802.15.4 radio for Thread, Zigbee and Matter. The datasheet is a pre-release marked preliminary, so pinouts and electrical figures can still change.

The ESP32-S3, for comparison, has two Xtensa LX7 cores at 240 MHz, Wi-Fi 4 and Bluetooth LE 5, and has been in production for years with a final datasheet, many modules and wide library support.

ESP-Mosaico

ESP-Mosaico is a modular development platform built on an ESP32-S31NRV16, with a 2.16-inch 480 × 480 touch display, 16 MB PSRAM, NAND and NOR flash, an IMU, magnetometers, audio and a small battery, plus expansion modules. Espressif pairs it with ESP-Claw, which lets you describe a prototype in plain language instead of setting up a development environment. CNX Software lists the complete kit with the camera and interaction modules at $59 on the Mosaico store, plus $15 for an optional battery module, and notes that earlier units sold on Taobao and AliExpress at higher prices.

A dev kit is a good way to try the chip. It does not tell you whether you can get 500 chips for a production run.

  • The bare ESP32-S3 was cheaper at DigiKey and Mouser than at JLCPCB, but stock was small everywhere: 129, 510 and 14 pieces.
  • For the PSRAM and flash variants and the modules, JLCPCB was cheapest, by 9 to 17% on the chips and 23 to 26% on the modules.
  • The N16R8 module had the deepest stock (27,681 at JLCPCB and 36,445 at Mouser) and cost only $0.09 more than the N8R8 at JLCPCB.
  • Every part here is an extended part at JLCPCB, so assembly adds $3 per order.

Which one to design in

  • A product you will build in the next few months: the ESP32-S3. It is in stock, documented and well supported.
  • You need Wi-Fi 6, Thread/Matter and Bluetooth Classic on one chip, or the S31's performance: start with a dev kit, track the datasheet revisions, and confirm a supply route for your volume before you commit a board.
  • Thread or Matter without the S31: the ESP32-C6, which is stocked at all three distributors; see ESP32 module prices.

Distributor listings for a new chip can appear any week. We will update this page when the ESP32-S31 shows up at JLCPCB, DigiKey or Mouser. Prices and stock are from 24 October 2026.
