Minimum order quantities at DigiKey and Mouser

A part listed at $0.001 can cost $15 when the only offer is a full reel of 15,000. On small builds, minimum order quantities and reel-only listings cost more than the price differences between distributors. These examples come from real BOMs and part lookups in October 2026.

ICS-43434 microphone (DigiKey)10cut tape $2.987; reel of 10,000 at $2.1252$29.87 on cut tape

The first three come from pricing the OpenFC-Lite BOM on 19 October 2026; the last two from lookups on 21 October 2026.

Why this happens

  • Reel-only listings. Some parts are only stocked as full manufacturer reels. Small passives come in reels of 5,000 to 15,000 pieces, so the minimum is the reel.
  • Cut tape and reels are separate listings. DigiKey lists the same part as cut tape (any quantity) and tape and reel (full reels only), each with its own stock. When the cut tape runs out, only the reel is left.
  • Trays set the price breaks. DigiKey's STM32G030F6P6 drops in price at 74, 148 and 518 pieces, which are whole trays. Ordering 70 costs more per piece than 74.
  • Brands the distributor rarely stocks. The UNI-ROYAL resistors and XINGLIGHT LEDs above are common at JLCPCB/LCSC, where the same parts cost a fraction of a cent with no minimum.

When a reel makes sense

Sometimes the reel is the better deal. The AP2112K-3.3TRG1 regulator was $0.1447 each on DigiKey cut tape at 100 pieces, or $0.11317 each on a 3,000-piece reel ($339.51). If you will use 3,000 over the next year, the reel saves up to about $95; if you need 100, it costs $325 more than you need to spend.

How to avoid paying for parts you will not use

  • Read the minimum before the price. Sort or filter by "minimum quantity: 1" or by cut tape packaging.
  • Price the quantity you need, not one piece. The total for your build is the number that matters.
  • Look at the next price break. Buying 74 instead of 70 can cost less in total.
  • Swap the part, not the distributor, when only reels are left. A 0201 resistor has many equivalents; see how to find a replacement.
  • Buy passives where they are sold loose. For generic resistors and capacitors, LCSC usually sells cut quantities of the same part numbers.

If you check a BOM with Next Everything, check_bom prices every offer at the quantity your build needs with the minimum applied, and lists offers whose minimum is far above your need last with a note.
